Answers in the Wind – An Artistic Reflection on Peace

As part of NOIBrera's latest collective initiative, titled Le linee continue della pace, a group exhibition centered on the theme of peace, I am pleased to share my recent work titled "Risposte nel vento" ("Answers in the Wind"). The exhibition takes place in Sesto San Giovanni, a historically symbolic city on the outskirts of Milan, and brings together a diverse group of artists united by the desire to reflect on the concept of peace through artistic expression.

The initiative Le linee continue della pace, curated by NOIBrera, is not only a visual project but also a civic and poetic act: a response to the complex and often painful questions raised by current global and social tensions. Through a variety of languages and media, each artist offers a unique perspective, encouraging dialogue and contemplation among viewers.

My contribution to this project is both a response to and a meditation on the enduring questions raised by Bob Dylan in his iconic 1962 song Blowin' in the Wind.

Dylan's lyrics pose universal, unresolved questions about war, justice, and human dignity: "How many times must the cannonballs fly before they're forever banned?" or "Yes, and how many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died?" These words remain painfully relevant, and their resonance inspired the visual and conceptual flow of my piece.

The artwork emerges from a hybrid process that moves between hand and machine, matter and light. It begins with a freehand drawing on paper: a gesture that sets the rhythm and dynamic structure. This sketch is then scanned and digitally manipulated, allowing me to explore color, contrast, and movement in a virtual space while preserving the expressive texture of the original lines. Once the composition reaches a certain balance, I print it on fine art paper and mount it onto canvas.

The final stage brings the work back to the tactile realm: layers of acrylic paint are applied by hand, enhancing depth, creating tension between flatness and relief, gesture and precision. This dialogue between analog and digital techniques aims to keep the surface alive, visible in its imperfections, and charged with emotion.

"Risposte nel vento" is not a depiction, but an invitation — a space of suspended meaning where the viewer is encouraged to stop and listen, to perceive what lies just beyond the visible. Like Dylan's song, it leaves the answers unspoken, carried elsewhere, perhaps in the wind.

Through this work, I hope to contribute a small yet sincere reflection on the fragility and urgency of peace — a concept as vital as it is elusive.
